Sky Dolly v0.8 has just been released. While this was supposed to merely be an "under the hood" release providing a new plugin architecture it still features a lot of new functionality!
For all new features please refer to the "Version History" here on flightsim.to, or to the complete CHANGELOG (on github.com).
So here are just a few highlights of Sky Dolly v0.8:
Multiplayer formation flights
KML export plugin
Logbook Filtering
And finally... a new application logo! Community, meet Sky Dolly - Sky Dolly, meet the community! 😊

The latest Sky Dolly v0.8.3 fixes two issues:
- The KML export dialog is now properly centered and put on top of the main window (specifically when the "Stay on Top" option is enabled)
- The initial velocity in the new "Fly with Formation" replay mode is now properly set
Unfortunately the FS 2020 simulation update 5 (SU 5) did not improve much the "AI aircraft jittering" which occurs in "formation flying". I now also noticed "blinking aircrafts" (that is, AI aircrafts which temporarily seem to "disappear" for one or two frames). That "blinking effect" occurs every then and when, and again (only) on "higher" (> 140 knots or so) airspeeds.
This is something I try to improve in the upcoming v0.9, although I am not sure quite yet whether this can be improved at all "client side" (that is, in Sky Dolly). I will investigate more!

🎂🎂🎂 HAPPY BIRTHDAY, FLIGHT SIMULATOR 2020 🎂🎂🎂
The Flight Simulator was released on August 18 2020 - today exactly one year ago!
As a little present also for the community the latest bug fix release Sky Dolly v0.8.5 also includes a new KML import plugin (accessible via File | Import | KML) which allows to import flight track data from https://flightaware.com.
Note that the "reconstructed attitude" and flaps/gear events is still very basic ("hardcoded" for now) and set under the assumption that he aircraft is "A320-like" (= commercial airliner). Also in most cases the final position coordinate is "under the ground", as the FS 2020 scenery data's altitude apparently does not always match exactly with reality. So expect the aircraft to "dive under the runway" a lot.
Those are know issues which might get addressed in future releases.
In any case I hope that you enjoy visualising real-world aviation in Flight Simulator 2020!

A new IGC format plugin has been provided in the just released v0.8.6, which otherwise only provides a few bug fixes related to import (KML mostly).
The IGC (International Gliding Commission) file format is mostly used by flight recorders in gliders. Basic position, task and header data is imported.
Known issues and limitations:
- The glider may "turn wildly" on the ground before start (due to slight "GPS noise" movements and the reconstructed heading)
- The GNSS altitude is imported - but even with the "pressure altitude" (which is currently ignored during import) the glider is either way above or below the MSFS terrain (this might be amended with an altitude offset option in the future)
- The "noise level" (an optional "fix" data in the B records) is currently ignored. This may be used in the future to enable/disable the engine
- In general "flight augmentation" (the reconstruction of flight attitude and operations) is still very simplistic (also for KML imported flight paths)

Happy birthday, Sky Dolly!
Sky Dolly was released a year ago here on flightsim.to, on the 28th February 2021. So at the time of this writing Sky Dolly just has become one year old, congratulations! 😊
And today the v0.9 was just released. Refer to the changelog for new features and improvements.
At the same time I would also like to thank the community and everyone who suggested improvements or simply wrote that the tool was genuinely useful to them. Thank you so much!
So round (year) two has just begun, and there are still plenty of features that I'd like to implement...

Dear all,
Sky Dolly v0.10.0 has just been released, focusing mostly on "under the hood" changes related to the import & export architecture. This release also provides new support for GeoJSON and GPX export.
"Again import & export plugins?" you may ask. The reason is that I wanted to "get this right" first before moving on towards new functionality - and there are still plenty of ideas and items on my "internal to-do list". Not to mention (possible) improvements related to formation flight - keyword: "aircraft jitter" - and most importantly also flight import and the mis-alignment of imported altitude data with the MSFS scenery (keywords, "WGS84", "undulation", "EGM 2008 geoid" - if you're "into the topic" you are very likely to immediately understand what this is all about 😉).
So what has been done with this "plugin architecture"? For one, I "refactored" the import and export code such that as much as possible "common code" may be re-used. For instance the KML import parsers for flightware.com, flightradar24.com and the "generic KML track parser" share most of their code now.
Also, common functionality such as "checking for file existence before overwritting existing files", "directory import", "formation export" and also "data resampling" (for export) are now implemented in common base classes. All plugins will immediately profit from enhancements in those areas.
So yes, this refactoring is a Good Thing(tm), and I wanted to have this done before moving on or adding even more import & export plugins (there are at least two formats that I'd still like to implement support for).
What's next? As usual I don't want to disclose my ideas too much, because Sky Dolly is still a "hobby project" for me, and I neither want to put pressure on myself nor do I want to disappoint anyone in case I never get to implement a "promised feature". But I can say that there is still existing functionality that I'd like to improve upon (formation flying, "aircraft jitter" and altitude import have already been mentioned) first before moving "to the next big thing"...
That said, I do have open ears for ideas from you - for instance the idea for the international gliding commission (IGC) file format support came from someone in the community! And I quite enjoyed digging into this format.
But as always, "it is fun for as long as it is fun" - and I still do have a lot of fun!
In that sense, happy flying!

Dear all,
Sky Dolly v0.11.1 has been released. "So where is the v0.11.0 then" - you may ask. Don't worry, you did not miss anything: shortly after packaging and uploading the release to github.com I noticed two regressions which I quickly fixed.
In fact, while this new v0.11 release may not look like it it is one of the biggest releases in terms of changed code: as compared with the previous v0.10 release a total of 505 source files have been changed, with 9,564 (line) additions and 6,963 deletions (which indicates that most source code lines have been changed, and only about 2,601 lines are new).
So what gives? Most new features are again improving existing functionality, but rather in a subtle way. The most visually noticeable change is the new "truly minimal UI" mode which - by default - only shows the very essential buttons. This behaviour is configurable in the settings.
You may find the full changelog here:
https://github.com/till213/SkyDolly/blob/main/CHANGELOG.md
Most other changes are "under the hood" though, "quality of life" changes, so to speak:
- The plugin managers - PluginManager and SkyConnectManager - are now in a single library
- In fact, all plugins are now built after the main application, which makes it possible to properly place them into the application bundle (on macOS, where Sky Dolly is developed for a large part 😉)
- The change notification system ("Qt signals and slots") has been rewritten, simplifying the update of "AI objects"
- Talking about "AI object management": AI objects are now only created "as needed" (previously all AI objects were removed and rebuilt "from scratch", causing lots of "aircraft flickering" when e.g. changing the user aircraft).
Now this last part cost me more time than anticipated, because the combination of
- Replay / recording states
- Replay modes. normal, user aircraft, fly with formation
- The new "Set relative position" option
made me quite some headache to the last moment. While I do think the Formation module works way better in terms of creating only the necessary AI objects and I am not aware of any issues like AI objects not being created (when they should) or the user aircraft not properly placed (in relation to the reference / last user aircraft of the formation) upon recording or changing the distance / bearing please report any issues and problems that you may find, either here in the comment section on flightsim.to, or - if you have a free github.com account - by raising an issue here:
https://github.com/till213/SkyDolly/issues
Note that the later has the advantage that I can ask for more details (if needed), you can attach screenshots - and you get notified automatically about the progress of the issue.
But as always, this is a pure hobby project and I spend as much time as I can afford on it - but no promises made about any support, but I'll do my best to at least quickly leave a reply!
Happy flying!

Sky Dolly v0.12 has just been released. It brings the architecture one huge step closer to the "final picture", by introducing modules as plugins. Plugins are immediately unloaded after use, decreasing memory (RAM) usage even further.
This version also introduces a new module: "Locations" allows to capture, manage and teleport to locations (given by their latitude/longitude). Locations may also have additional attributes such as their type, country and description.

Happy 40th Anniversary, Flight Simulator!
Sky Dolly "Dapper Daher" (v0.13) has just been released. While most development focused again on "under the hood improvements" a couple of new features and usability improvements have been introdcued, too.
Most notably the locations can now be exported and imported in CSV format. Besides Sky Dolly's own CSV format the "user points" CSV format from Little Navmap is also supported, making it possible to exchange locations between those two applications.
In fact, here on flightsim.to you'll find "user point" CSV files for essentially all aircraft and POIs introduced with all world updates, and more. Import them and you will have access to "photogrammetry cities", movie locations, all handcrafted airports and more.
https://flightsim.to/file/17193/little-navmap-msfs-poi-database
In addition now 101 "system" locations are provided, most coming from https://flightspots.co/ - unfortunately this service seems to be "terminating its radar services", by end of November 2022 already (at the time of this writing the website is still online though). All locations have been fine-tuned and GPS coordinates verified, including initial speed, altitude and heading.
The locations now also feature a new property: engine state. It is now possible to shutdown or start the engine upon "teleporting" to the desired location (or just keep it "as is"). This makes it possible to start anywhere on the world, for instance on helipads that wouldn't otherwise show up on the world map.
Other improvements such as all aircraft types up to and including the 40th anniversary update have been added to the "aircraft selector" combo box (when importing flights). Note that as usual new aircraft types, specifically 3rd party aircraft, are automatically added as they are recorded.
For more usability improvement details and bug fixes also refer to the complete CHANGELOG on github.com:

Dear all, I wish you a Happy New Year 2023, health to you, your family and friends, and most of all peace to everyone!
Just before Christmas the Sky Dolly downloads crossed the 30'000 download mark. Thank you so much, to each and everyone of you! To clarify: I am not measuring the success of Sky Dolly in download numbers. I develop Sky Dolly for my own needs, in the hope that it might be useful to others, to keep up with "modern C++ development patterns and language features" - and most importantly for the fun of it!
So each comment of encouragement, or even a simple "Sky Dolly does exactly what I need!" means so much to me! So thank you again.
A Bit of History...
Sky Dolly is pretty much exactly 2 years old now - that is, development started with the first "commit", like:
Commit: 11380a0652d5ab760983d5b007ec82ca398cdd69 [11380a0]Author: Oliver Knoll <[email protected]>Date: Dienstag, 22. December 2020 13:35:36Committer: Oliver Knoll
The first v0.1 was released shortly thereafter here on flightsim.to (end of February 2021).
The first year 2021 mainly focused on adding new SimConnect / recording / replay related features and already introduced a database ("SQLite") based persistence and other unique features:
the second year - 2022 - mainly focused on architectural aspects, driving forward the "plugin-based architecture" and applying it not only to the connection with the flight simulator (yes, also the communication with MSFS is plugin-based 😉) and the various import/export plugins, but also the "modules":
And while I certainly take some "shortcuts" every here and there, especially in the "user interface department", each feature is implemented with "ease of use" in mind. For instance you can simply seek forward and backward at any time, without first having to click on "pause" or "stop" first. Or you can start replaying right after recording, without having to "load a file" first. And for pretty much every action exists a keyboard shortcut, including access to all UI elements.
Yes, describing those things sounds silly enough, because as a user you should take them for granted. But from what I hear not every developer takes those usability aspects seriously the same way as I do, surprisingly enough.
... And a Quick Outlook
As mentioned in various replies here in the flightsim.to comments I don't generally promise any concrete features, let alone making any commitments of any sort. This is simply because Sky Dolly is developed in my spare time, for fun and mostly for my own needs.
While this may sound selfish this is actually a good thing, for two reasons: first, whenever something annoys me, be it "too many mouse clicks required" or a "missing feature" you can be sure it ends up on my internal "to do" list. While this does not guarantee any timely implementation it is "in my own interest" to eventually implement or improve on it.
Second, most "community wishes" are pretty much aligned with my own wishes. Perhaps not with the exact same priorities, but so far I never encountered a suggestion where I had to completely say "no, that totally does not make any sense at all" 😊
That being said, I can reveal the "top three annoying things" that I intend to fix / improve next:
I made already some developments with regards to the first bullet point, but while I had some success with my ideas in some cases, there were "setbacks" in other cases (notably with the A320 by Fenix - what's more, the latest 1.0.6 Fenix release makes matters even worse, in that this version does not even properly report the "simulation variables" correctly anymore, specifically "flaps" and "thrust lever position").
But I am not giving up just yet 😉
Once those things are implemented there is a plethora of other new features that I have in mind, but again... psssst! 😊
I will now leave and visit my family and celebrate the 2023 a little bit and again wish you all a very happy 2023 as well!
Best, "Steeler"
P.S. A small bug fix release v0.13.1 has just been released. The most important fix is probably the "typo fix" in the location CSV export in Little Navmap format ("airport" is now spelled correctly, letting Little Navmap properly assigning the correct icon to it)
