The Mellumplate lighthouse (German: Leuchtturm Mellumplate) is an active lighthouse located to the north of the island of Mellum, in the district of Frisia,
in Lower Saxony, Germany. Managed by the Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) in Wilhelmshaven1, this historic structure has an interesting history.
History: The Mellumplate lighthouse was built between 1939 and 1942, to the north-west of the island of Mellum and to the west of Minsener Oog. Originally designed as an anti-aircraft
anti-aircraft gun battery during the Second World War, soldiers were stationed in the tower. After the war, the tower was fitted with a lantern to replace the fireboat
at Minsener Sand, and was guarded by guards until 1973. Since then, it has been fully automated. The prefabricated cylindrical
supports a seven-storey quadrangular reinforced concrete building. The tower is immersed at a depth of 23 metres. In 1968, the building was covered
and fitted with a helicopter landing pad. Since 2005, the helipad is no longer used and the quay has been renovated to accommodate a maintenance boat.
Location: The lighthouse is located around 6 kilometres east of Schillig and marks the shallow entrance to the Bay of Jade.
Description: The Mellumplate lighthouse is covered in aluminium plates. It emits a continuous white light along the line of the channel.
Ships slightly south of the channel see a short, faint light.
Thank You Michel and Marc
