Rathmines was formed in 1939 and became one of the major RAAF flying boat bases during WW11, and housed Nos,9,11,20,40,43 and 107 Squadrons. Closed in 1960.s.Wing Commander J.E.Hewitt was in command.
The RAAF Base at Rathmines became the largest RAAF Flying boat base in the southern hemosphere.
Aircraft at the base were the famous Catalina's, others were Seagulls,Dornier,and Dolphinand Shorts.
