Repaint of the Sky Simulations MD-11 in the National Airlines (NAL). NAL was an American Airline that operated from 1934 until 1980 when it was purchased by Pan Am. Pan Am at the time was only allowed to operate international routes and wanted to expand their route network to the US domestic market, so they bought National Airlines at a very inflated price of $437 million. The price of NAL was driven up in a bidding war as a plan of Texas Air Corp/Frank Lorenzo to keep Pan Am out of the US domestic market. in the 70's NAL created an advertising campaign that was controversial but successful, the Fly Me campaign. N80NA was named Tammy, and you could fly her non stop to Miami. She kept the name until 1977 when she changed her name and gender to Bing Crosby. In 1980 when Pan Am completed the purchase of National, N80NA was renamed to Clipper Star of the Union. In 1984, N80NA was sold to American Airlines when it was re-registed N139AA. It was damaged beyond repair and written off in 1993 when it drifted off the runway at DFW and caused the undercarriage to collapse.
