DESCRIPTION
In 1988, an 11,000 kilometer journey took an old Douglas DC-3 twin-engine propeller plane from the United States to Turin.
HISTORY
The history of the C-47D began in 1944 at the Douglas factories in Long Beach, as one of the many military versions of the commercial DC-3.
Assigned to the 9th Air Force of the USAAF, he arrived in Great Britain in November 1944. At the end of the conflict he returned to the USA and was set aside for a few months in the "aircraft cemetery" of Davis-Monthan (Ariz.).
In 1947 he was converted and began a career with the USAAF that would last over twenty years. Until he returned to the United States in 1964. He then returned in 1967 to the United Kingdom, where he had begun his career over twenty years earlier, and remained there until June 1969. Sold on the civilian market, it changed ownership numerous times until passing, in 1987, to Duncan Aircraft Sales of Venice (Florida).
It was in Florida that, after a few months, it was identified by the SAGAT company which purchased it to make a monument.
THE RESTORATION
In 1989, it was restored and used as a projection room for school visits to the airport facilities.
Then, due to the desire to relocate it at the airport entrance, the aircraft was transferred to the Alenia Aeronautica factories in Caselle Sud, where technicians and workers attempted to recover it by providing structural restoration and damaged parts, and complete repainting . The aircraft was repainted with the historic livery of LAI, Linee Aeree Italiane, one of the first post-war Italian airlines.
The DC-3 has thus returned to its ancient beauty and to welcome passengers at Turin Airport with its unquestionable charm.

Nel 1988 un viaggio di 11 mila chilometri portò dagli Stati Uniti a Torino un vecchio bimotore ad elica Douglas DC-3.
LA STORIA
La storia del C-47D inizia nel 1944 negli stabilimenti Douglas di Long Beach, come una delle tante versioni militari del DC-3 commerciale.
Assegnato alla 9th Air Force dell’USAAF, giunge in Gran Bretagna nel novembre 1944 al termine del conflitto rientra negli USA e viene accantonato per qualche mese nel “cimitero degli aerei” di Davis-Monthan (Arizona).
Nel 1947 viene convertito ed inizia una carriera con l’USAAF che durerà oltre vent’anni. Finché nel ’64 rientra negli Stati Uniti. Torna quindi nel 1967 ancora nel Regno Unito, dove aveva iniziato la sua carriera oltre vent’anni prima, e vi rimane fino al giugno 1969. Venduto sul mercato civile, cambia di proprietà numerose volte fino a passare, nel 1987, alla Duncan Aircraft Sales di Venice (Florida).
È in Florida che, dopo qualche mese, viene individuato, dalla società SAGAT che lo acquista per farne un monumento.
IL RESTAURO
Nel 1989, il viene restaurato e adibito a sala di proiezione, in occasione di visite scolastiche alle strutture aeroportuali.
Poi, per la volontà di ricollocarlo all’ingresso dell’aeroporto, il velivolo è stato trasferito negli stabilimenti Alenia Aeronautica di Caselle Sud, dove tecnici e maestranze si sono cimentati nel suo recupero provvedendo al restauro strutturale e delle parti danneggiate, e alla riverniciatura completa. Il velivolo è stato ridipinto con la storica livrea della LAI, Linee Aeree Italiane, una delle prime compagnie aeree italiane del dopoguerra.
Il DC-3 è così ritornato all’antica bellezza e a dare il benvenuto, con il suo indiscutibile fascino, ai passeggeri dell’Aeroporto di Torino.
