The Lac de Villefort, or Lac Bayard, is the reservoir of the Barrage de Villefort. It is located in the Lozère department near the city of Villefort .
Built in 1964, this dam was to supply electricity to the equivalent of 80,000 people. About thirty people living in the hamlet of Bayard had to be expropriated, the impoundment of the dam having to completely engulf the hamlet.
The lake has a volume of 37 million cubic meters of water.
This lake supplies the Pied-de-Borne hydroelectric plant after a penstock of about 10 km.
Today, in addition to electricity, the dam is an essential point of Lozère tourism: walks, hikes, fishing and nautical activities.
The lake is crossed by the Viaduc de l'Altier or Viaduc de Villefort. Commissioned in 1870, this structure is the tallest classical masonry viaduct in France. It has two levels of arches: a first level with 4 semi-circular arches, and a second level with 11 semicircular arches of 16 meters opening.
Since the construction of the dam, the lower level of the viaduct is underwater and its current apparent height is only about twenty meters. It however fluctuates with the level variations of the lake.
On the shores of the lake, sits the Château de Castanet. The territory of Castanet has the origin of its name ("chataîgner") in the Occitan language, as chestnut trees are the most common trees in the territory.
The château was built in 1578 by Jacques Isarn, a noble of Villefort. This family continued to grow in importance until marriage to a descendant by Marie-Suzanne de Varicourt, Marquise de Villefort.
The castle was sold in 1760 to a lawyer of Villefort and it was sold again as a national property during the French Revolution. When the national company Electricité de France decided to build the dam in the valley, the owners of the castle were expropriated and the castle was planned to be destryed. However the villagers revolted and the castle was eventually added to the Inventory of Historical Monuments. In 1964, E.D.F. assigned the monument to the community of communes of Villefort. The château was reinforced to protect it from the lake.
In 2000, a fire destroyed the château but after extensive renovation, it reopened its doors in 2006. It now hosts a permanent exhibition on the history of the region and temporary exhibitions of artists and craftsmen.
This mod also feature the pont Louis-Philippe, which was built between 1960 and 1962 and is a little less than 200 meters long.
The mod comes with a POI for the Lac de Villefort.
This mod is not intended for sale or resale.

Merci.
